MIB & MHROD, Department of Commerce (Delhi School of Economics) presents 15th Annual Convention "Erudition 2010". Constructing Corporate Conscience: Introspecting The Resurgence.

What doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger. Or does it?

In the intrinsically destabilising system of capitalism that is known to drive the largest economies of the world, the threats to prosperity are many. Perhaps the biggest testimony to this has been the past two decades, which have seen such highs of growth and such depths of depression, that the course of future cannot still be predicted. And while we emerge, albeit precariously, from the depression that seemed to have swallowed the behemoth corporations and crumbled the largest economies, there are certain questions that need answering, and soon.

As Milton Friedman pointed out, "The one and only social responsibility of Business is to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game". What are these rules? Who makes them? Touted as the system that rewards personal ambition and effort, what is it in capitalism that leads to a psyche of greed and fear? Is it not important for those in power- both in business and in governments- to behave responsibly? Can organizations figure out a way to grow along with fulfilling their social responsibilities? Are we already seeing a humane side of the shrewd businessman? What are the changes that the organization, both as an entity and an individual, needs to implement? What are the ethical challenges for the post recession managers? Important questions all, and especially in the backdrop of the global financial crises. And although traces of recovery and resurgence emerge, these questions become even more important, lest the demons from the past behaviour come to haunt us in the future. Therefore, the call of the hour is caution, and more importantly, INTROSPECTION, to identify what doesn't work for us anymore, and what does...

As the future managers, we are handed with the responsibility of making good decisions, CONSCIENTIOUS decisions. And to help us in this, it is with immense pride that the students and faculty of the MHROD and MIB, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, hold our 15th Annual Convention, Erudition 2010, themed "CREATING CORPORATE CONSCIENCE: Introspecting the Resurgence", to help us in this very quest-to find what went wrong over the past three years, and have we learnt anything from the same, as well as attempt to shed light on and evaluate the various corporate strategies and policies that the organisations throughout the country are adopting in an attempt to be more humane.
