BACKGROUND
Professional education plays a pivotal role in human resource development. In the present day world, knowledge and skills have emerged as key factors in the quest for sustainable human development. Therefore the role of professional education has become even more important. In this context, the system of professional education needs a thorough scrutiny of its aims, objectives, methods and procedures.

Today we are witnessing an unprecedented demand for diversification in professional higher education, together with an increased awareness of its vital importance for socio-cultural and economic development. In such situation our endeavour should be to enhance the quality of professional education in different fields.

Further, institutions of higher learning are facing increasing problems of credibility and quality. The increasing choices in public policy decisions' have necessitated professional programmes to be relevant, attractive and connected. Thus students should be prepared for a broader range of careers enabled by lifelong learning involving both formal programmes and hands-on experience. Consequently
professional programs need to be attractive so that the intellectual content of professional education may attract highly talented students and empower them to succeed. Professional programs also need to be connected to the requirements of the broader community through integration with other parts of the educational system, industry and
government Innovative approaches to teaching and learning, recruitment and retention, relationship between research and education are essential. A key element of success in these endeavors is strong partnership of professional institutions with industry, broader community and the Government.
